Painting: The Rosetta Stone, an informal slide presentation/lecture about painting on Friday, October 8 at 6:30pm.

The goal of this presentation is to reexamine a number of paintings’ timeless qualities, qualities that can be easily overlooked in an art world where multi/inter disciplinary amalgams are becoming the norm for what constitutes serious art.

That said, the art world is big enough to engage all forms of art making and content. It is ironic then that the most engaging art experience, through either making or collecting, is painting. My desire in this interactive presentation is to discuss some of the reasons for this. – John McNamara

John McNamara has been shown nationally and internationally and has been written about in magor art publications including Art News, Art in America and Art Forum. He was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1981. His paintings are in the collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, Rose Art Museum, Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Speed Museum of Art, Tampa Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art and the De Cordova Museum and Sculpture Park among others.

McNamara came to the Art Practice Department at UC Berkeley in the fall of 1993. In 1994 he developed and implemented the course “Art 8, Introduction to Visual Thinking,” an entry-level course focusing on the investigation of art processes and conceptual strategies. In the spring of 2005 he received “The Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentorship of GSI’s” form the GSI Teaching and Resource Center.

We hope you’re able to come and spend an hour with us. We promise you’ll leave with an increased ability to understand and appreciate paintings. Seating is limited, please RSVP at 415-945-9454, gallery@bergelli.com.
